Freedom Seekers

Hey, we’re Kat & Marek! 🚐✨ We swapped the ‘normal’ life for full-time caravan living & campsite adventures!

The Unspoken Truth: How to Deep Clean Your Caravan or Motorhome Toilet Cassette (Our Bleach Hack!)

Hi, hello, and welcome! Thank you very much for stopping by. If you’re new here, my name is Kat. I live, work on, and travel in a caravan. Today, we’re getting serious about a topic every caravanner or RVer faces: the toilet cassette.

It’s an awkward necessity, but a hygienic, smell-free cassette is essential for a happy life on the road. We’re sharing our tried-and-true hack for a deep, sanitizing clean that ensures your cassette lasts for years.

It’s actually quite comforting—whether your caravan is 30 years old or brand new, or you have a shiny motorhome, almost everyone has to empty that cassette. Since the bowl and cassette are plastic (not ceramic!), they tend to absorb smells and residue, making regular maintenance a must. We deep clean ours every week, because otherwise? Well, it simply stinks.

Let’s get into the step-by-step process for banishing those nasty odours forever.

Our Secret Weapon: The Bleach Hack

To achieve a true deep clean, we rely on a secret weapon that works better than any fancy chemical: regular bleach.  We usually order a 5l bottle from Amazon to keep the costs down. One bottle is usually enough for one season.

Now, hold on before you call me out! I know the debate. Bleach can threaten the beneficial bacteria in a septic tank. However, used sparingly and infrequently (we only do this once a week), it is the most effective way to fully sanitise and deodorise the plastic tank.

⚠️ A Crucial Warning: Always, always check with the site owners before using bleach in their chemical disposal point. If you are unsure, save the deep clean for when you get home and can flush the bleach solution down your household toilet. Safety first!

Step-by-Step Deep Cleaning Guide

This hack is simple, fast, and incredibly effective. No gloves necessary for this crazy maniac (though if you’re a glove user, let me know why in the comments—it’s a whole separate topic!):

1. Empty and Rinse

Take your cassette to the chemical toilet point and fully empty it. Then, give it a quick initial rinse with clean water to remove immediate residue.

Emptying the toilet cassette at an Elsan point is a regular job for any caravanner!

2. Introduce the Bleach

With the cassette empty, pour a small amount of bleach inside. You truly don’t need much—just a few teaspoons. It can be any basic supermarket-brand bleach; no need for expensive, specialized versions.

3. Fill and Soak

Next, fill the cassette to the brim with clean water. The water dilutes the bleach, and this solution will completely saturate and sterilize the entire inside of the plastic tank. Leave it to soak for at least 5 to 10 minutes. This allows the bleach to really work its way into the plastic and kill any lingering germs or odours.

Fill the toilet cassette with a diluted bleach and water solution, and leave it to soak for at least 5 minutes for best disinfecting results.

4. The Final Rinse

After the soak time, empty the bleach water completely. Follow up with one last thorough rinse of clean water to ensure all the bleach solution is gone. Your cassette is now hygienic, sanitized, and odour-free!

The Finishing Touch: Toilet Perfume

The deep clean is done, but we always add a finishing touch. While we use a special blue liquid in the flush tank (which prevents those dreaded “obnoxious and explosive gases!”), we also pour a small amount of it directly into the newly cleaned cassette.

5l caravan toilet fluid we use.

This blue fluid is our toilet’s “Chanel Number Five.” It ensures that every time you open the cassette to use it, you aren’t ambushed by an unpleasant odour but are greeted by a pleasant, fresh scent instead. Buying it in large containers online is a great value, too!

Job done! We’re now set for another two or three happy days of carefree caravanning.
